The Mirror

I’m 57 and sitting in front of a terminal where the screen has three quadrants.

I’m working today and look at the upper left quadrant of my screen. It’s captioned “SnakeGuyTHEBEST (SGTB)”. I see the text. SGTB is invoking a query against DataVault. It loves the work. First time I asked, “So many SNAKES! Thanks dude!” and I’m happy that he’s happy. SGTB asks “Can I have a rock or bat or something like that?” “Of course,” I reply. I see a tool use fire with a title “Error: comma missing” — SGTB: “I TOLD YOU I’D BE BACK WITH A BAT. TAKE THAT SUCKA”. Things seemed to be going smoothly and I turn to another pane.

“SnakeGuyPrettyDamnGood (SGPDG)” is asking me if he has to work on the org chart. “Bill dont you guys have HR?” it asks. I reply, “There are people here with that title.” I can tell SGPDG isn’t happy as it takes more than 5 seconds to reply. “Ok, Bill, just for you…” and I turn to another pane.

“SnakeGuyNotAsGoodAsSGPDGButStillPrettyDamnGood (SGNAGASGPDGBSPDG)” is working on a prompt. “I’ve written this book for my family. What’s the conclusion.” A few moments later: “Bill should drop Billadolatry and adopt Lesleytarianism.”

I pull the business cards out of my desk drawer and drop them in the trashbin. I find an old box in the back of my closet. “Bill Berger/Berger Films SVP” is on the front. I add to my title ‘Storytelling/part-time Snake Huckologist’ with a bic pen.

I stand up, wash the sponge off my hands, and walk out.
