Nedrys Demise

Ch 08 - Nedry’s Demise

Nedry drove overly fast down a muddy road in a jeep that somehow seemed too small for one person. It was very well branded however. The jeep’s tires slid as he took a sharp turn. Isla Nublar’s riotous vegetation was a black and green smudge that offered him the occasional cold shower.

He looked down at the frill cream canister holding embryos for multiple human species: Taxi Driver, American Football Fan, European Football Fan, US Marine, Nurse, Butcher, and Runner to name a few. He had no idea what kind of society this might make, but it sounded angry. Maybe the Runners could counterbalance all the blood and misery that the others bring? All he knew was his contact worked for The Jerry Dinospringer Show and had enough money.

Nedry thought of all the money and what he could buy with it. A Pentium with a sixty-six megahertz processor. VESA Local Bus with 2 MB of VRAM would make the DinoDoom just scream and the SoundBlaster 16 would just bring in all the ladies as well. WinRAR? A generational license for the entire Nedry clan. Nobody pays for WinRAR at the Nedry home anymore, he thought.

His jeep screamed through the forest as he thought, “That uberjar will never stop compiling. I’ll escape in the chaos and people will assume I was eaten or something. Then, Nedry will just disappear into a fantasy of meat bars and free compression software.”

Suddenly, a road sign appeared in his headlights. He slammed on the brakes but the sign post was undone: the sign itself flew away in newfound freedom. Nedry had run off the road in the middle of a fork. Nedry cursed himself, “Damn it. Forgot the fork in the road!”

He tried to back up but the slick mud under the microjeep’s tires gained no traction. “Damn it! Ugh. I’ll need to use the winch, I guess!” said the lead developer. He exited and was immediately soaked by the sheets of water from the inbound typhoon. He slid down leaving mud over his right side until he reached the front of his Tonka car.

Nedry found the sign. It had a now loose arrow pointing to the possible road to take for the dock. The other way, he assumed, led to something unspeakable. He’d just have to guess based on his lossy memory of the island’s geography. If he chose poorly, it would be bad; like choosing Teams over Slack bad — life-threatening.

Nedry started to climb up the muddy hill with the winch hook in hand. As he passed the driver’s side door, a strange human sat there looking at him.

“HIUBER? HIUBER? LEEEFT! LEEEFT!” the Ride Share human said.

Nedry waved a very wet talon and tried to shoo the human, “NO RIDE! Not on duty! Scram! Shoo! Get lost!”

The Ride Share human hissed and left the jeep. It slunk back into the vegetation.

Nedry clambered up the mud and muck. A large tree on the other side of the road looked strong enough for the job. He ran the steel cable around the tree’s heavy wooden trunk. He slipped the hook under the cable to make a strong loop and made his sodden, muddy, and now leafy way back to the awaiting jeep.

“HIUBER,” the Ride Share human said through bared teeth.

Nedry yelled, “NO RIDE!”

The Ride Share human pulled out a glass object that appeared to be its mobile phone.

“0 stars!” the human cried. It slammed the glass into Nedry’s surprised and suddenly bisected cranium.
